Pentecost

Fifty days after the resurrection. Wind fills the room. Fire appears above each head. They speak in languages they never learned, and everyone in the crowd hears the message in their own native tongue.

The reversal of Babel. But Pentecost doesn't restore one language. Each person hears in their own tongue. Understanding across genuine difference. No one's particularity erased.

The First Church

"They continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." Shared everything, sold possessions, distributed to anyone in need.

Three things emerge together: teaching and authority, fellowship and shared life, economic sharing. They need each other. Authority without fellowship is tyranny. Fellowship without shared resources is sentiment. Economics without communal bonds is a market.

The Jerusalem Council

Must Gentile converts become Jews to follow Christ? The council decides: no. The formal requirements yield to the reality on the ground, Gentiles are already receiving the Spirit, already in relationship with God. When the rule and the reality conflict, the reality takes priority.

The door opens. The story becomes universal.

Paul

The New Testament's most intense thinker. Systems, arguments, connections, but always in service of how real people in real communities can live together.

Romans

Paul's masterpiece.

Faith as leaning. "The just shall live by faith." Faith is relational trust, leaning your weight on what holds you.

Grace exceeds. "Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound." The ledger doesn't balance. It tips toward life.

Three groanings. Creation groaning. Believers groaning. The Spirit groaning. Three levels of reality in labor. Birth-labor, shared.

Nothing separates. "Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God." Every possible threat tested. Every one fails.

The Body

One body, many members. And Paul can't stop using the prefix syn-, Greek for "together with."

Suffer-with. Rejoice-with. Hold-together. Groan-as-one. Co-heirs. Co-buried. Co-raised. Remove "together" from Paul's vocabulary and the sentences collapse.

Love

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass."

Eloquence without love: noise. Prophecy without love: nothing. Knowledge without love: nothing. Faith without love: nothing. Sacrifice without love: profitless.

"And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

Three things remain when everything else passes away.

Freedom

"Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free." You're free. Now what will you do with it? The law as coercion is over. The law as wisdom remains.

Emptying

Paul quotes an early hymn: Jesus was in the form of God but "emptied himself." Servant. Human. Cross. Then exalted above every name.

The exaltation comes through the emptying. The downward movement is the path. Moving toward what's most fundamental is a movement of letting go.

Holding Together

"By him all things consist", to hold together. That prefix again: syn-. Everything cohering together-in-him.

Philemon

The shortest letter. Paul sends a runaway slave back to his master, but asks the master to receive him as a brother.

Paul could command. He has the authority. Instead: "For love's sake I rather beseech." He creates the conditions for a genuine choice: real alternatives, full information, no coercion. Then steps back.
